• Pelvic muscle exercises
  Pelvic muscle exercises (also known as Kegel exercises) work on strengthening the muscles that control urine flow. When done correctly and consistently (generally three times a day for several months), the exercises can help control mild SUI.
• Urethral inserts
  A urethral insert is used to prevent urine leakage without surgery or drugs. Currently, FemSoft is the only urethral insert for sale in the U.S. When the user needs to urinate, she removes and disposes of the insert, and if desired, inserts another. Depending on how often you use the product, it can take a couple of days to two weeks to feel confident using FemSoft on your own.
• Pessary devices
  A pessary is a stiff ring that is inserted into the vagina each day and removed daily for cleaning. The pessary may benefit women whose SUI is caused by a dropped bladder or uterus.
• Medication
  As with other drugs, the risks of SUI-related medications include negative side effects and drug interactions. However, there are currently no medications indicated for the management or treatment of SUI.
• Surgery
  Surgery should be considered as a last resort when all other methods have failed. The risks of surgery for SUI include infection, increased urgency or urine retention, and lack of effectiveness.

A clinician trained in the management of incontinence will help determine if FemSoft is right for you, but the product has been proven effective for women with the following:

• Mild to severe SUI
• Weak pelvic floor muscles
• Weak muscles around the urethra
• Unsuccessful incontinence surgery or other SUI treatments
• Combination of stress and urge incontinence
• Single, multiple, or no childbirths
• Pre- and post-menopausal
• All ages

FemSoft has coverage by Medicare and a growing number of insurance companies. Be sure to check with your insurance provider for details on their reimbursement policy.

A trained specialist needs to evaluate you first to ensure that FemSoft is right for you. If it is, your clinician will fit you with the correct size of insert that is best for your body, and show you how to insert it yourself.

Some women choose to use multiple inserts throughout the day, whether they are at work or doing chores around the home; others only use FemSoft for select activities, such as gardening, jogging, horseback riding, or bowling. FemSoft is removed when you need to void. If additional protection is desired, simply place a new insert. Remove FemSoft before going to sleep at night.

No serious health risks or side effects have been reported. The most common problem reported in the five-year clinical study was urinary tract infection or bacteria in the urine. Occasionally, new users experience a small amount of spotting or blood in the urine caused by irritation while they are learning to use FemSoft. Other potential problems may include: urinary frequency, pain or burning during urination, inability to retain the insert, or movement of the insert into the bladder.
